No confirmation of large-scale atrocities in East Timor: Red Cross
JAKARTA, Nov 24 (AFP) - The International Committee of the Red Cross has found "no confirmation of large-scale atrocities" in the Alas region of East Timor, the ICRC regional representative told AFP Tuesday.
"Our cross-checking on the spot showed nothing that would indicate a confirmation that any large-scale atrocities had taken place," said Toni Pfanner after receiving a report from an ICRC team which has been in Alas for the past 24 hours.
Unconfirmed but persistent reports circulating since last week have said the Indonesian army had massacred dozens, and possibly hundreds, of East Timorese civilians in the Alas area.
